Work on Kirribilli House 33 started a while ago just after we completed Kirribilli House 32, which we gave to Lucena after her delapidated house collapsed. Kirribilli House 33 came about because very near our construction site lived Jimmy, a man occupying a small shanty, a sad picture of grinding poverty. He asked if he could salvage some of the materials from the fallen house so he could build a better place for himself.
I drew up a plan for him to make the best possible use of the materials that were available. We had a bit of extra funds left over from Kirribilli House 32, so we were also able to provide him with a few bags of cement and some gravel to help. He already had some roofing sheets but were not enough so we also provided him with a few more too.
After two years the above pictures show how far the limited materials he had available carried him. The main framing and roof are up, but work has remained at a standstill for some time. So we have decided to provide him with the remaining materials to finish the project: plywood for the floor, amakan (a native bamboo wall cladding) for the walls, plus the windows and doors. It would be wonderful for him to begin the new year living in a more comfortable place. (I think he sleeps in that bit with tarpaulin cover.)
We have built thirty-four houses so far for the needy. We strive to give a little ray of light in this often-difficult and harsh world and hope to make a difference to people’s lives, something we could not achieve without your continued support.
